Using the master faders on right side of Live screen

I have not been able to get the master faders in live to work.

I created a simple scene with one step that turns on a single channel house light dimmer to 50%.
Assigned a button in Live to the scene. The button turns the light on/off.
While the button is pressed (light on), I assigned a master fader to "dimmer", and selected the channel in the faders channel popup.
Moving the fader has no effect on the selected house light.
What am I doing wrong?
