Opening a Timeline from Buttons

Actually I can't seem open a saved timeline file to the timeline window, nor launch one from a button after assignment. I saw a video showing you had to have both windows open for it to work (I assume from a "child" buttons window?) but I cannot get a timeline to open from a button or the "open" option. What am I missing?
