The Lighting Controller

I'm new to DMX and have went through the first three training videos numerous times. Software is loaded, 512 box with driver loaded. When I click on 3d view the icon pops up in the task bar but when you click it , it doesn't expand/open. It does go to a different shade like it is open , but nothing ...
